TUSCALOOSA PUBLIC LIBRARY AWARDED GRANT FROM ALA AND FETZER INSTITUTE TO HOST BUILDING COMMON GROUND
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (February 21, 2012) – The Tuscaloosa Public Library received a $2,500 grant from the American Library Association (ALA) and the Fetzer Institute to host “Building Common Ground: Discussions of Community, Civility, and Compassion,” a national initiative to enhance the quality of life and learning within the community through a series of library programs.
TPL is one of 30 public libraries nationwide receiving grants to host the series, which will encourage participants to consider the importance of community, civility, and compassion in their daily lives. The Tuscaloosa Public Library will partner with the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama to host programs and events that include reading, viewing, reflection, and civic engagement initiatives tailored specifically to unite Tuscaloosa; City and County.
TPL will offer six to eight programs to spark action, engagement, and reflection among community members over the next eight months. Some programs will include book discussion groups, a poetry slam, school drawing contests, a “Virtual Museum” panel discussion, a volunteer service fair and an open forum on bullying in the fall. Under this grant, the Main library book discussion will examine The Grace of Silence by Michele Norris on Tuesday, February 28, 2012. Further event details will emerge closer to actual program dates.
