The Weaver Bolden Branch Library is located on 18th Street adjacent to the Benjamin Barnes Branch of the YMCA. The branch is named in honor of two of Tuscaloosa’s most respected African American educators: Dr. George Augustus Weaver (1872 -1939), and Mrs. Ruth Cummings Bolden (1910-2005). Dr. Weaver was a physician at the Stillman Hospital and generously made his personal library available for local African American students before the establishment of a public library which served them. Mrs. Ruth Bolden was the first librarian of this branch from 1948-1975 and requested that it be named for Dr. Weaver. In 1990 the branch was renamed the Weaver Bolden Branch Library in honor of her years of service.
The Weaver Bolden Branch offers its patrons the same materials and services offered at the Main Branch. Requested materials are transferred daily from the Main Branch to Weaver and from Weaver to the Main Branch. The branch holds a Story Hour for preschool children as well as an after school Homework Help Center four days a week. .A book discussion group for adults meets the last Thursday of each month.
