About the Weaver Branch

The Weaver Bolden Branch is named in honor of two of Tuscaloosa’s most respected African American educators: Dr. George Augustus Weaver (1872 -1939), and Mrs. Ruth Cummings Bolden (1910-2005). Dr. Weaver was a physician at the Stillman Hospital and generously made his personal library available for local African American students before the establishment of a public library which served them. Mrs. Ruth Bolden was the first librarian of this branch from 1948-1975 and requested that it be named for Dr. Weaver. In 1990 the branch was renamed the Weaver Bolden Branch Library in honor of her years of service.
